The following was published in the Investors Business Daily. The quote of Rand Paul deserves some of our deepest thought.
Old-line Republicans tend to regard Sen. Rand Paul as some sort of madman. But the Kentucky Republican often says the things they should be saying, but seem to have forgotten. For instance, he's made the suggestion that we give freedom a try.
While being interviewed on Fox News by Greta Van Susteren, Paul told her "we could try freedom for a while" when she asked what Republicans would do if they actually succeeded in repealing ObamaCare.
"We had it for a long time," he said. "That's where you sell something and I agree to buy it because I like it. That is how we operate in most of the rest of the marketplace, other than health care."
It's also how we should operate in many other domains. We could try to exercise more freedom in our speech, energy markets, financial markets, commerce, and firearms ownership. We should be free of the regulatory state, Washington's administrative regime and its grasping hands, snooping federal agents, and government's ever-widening reach at all levels.
This isn't radical thinking.
It's a return to the ideal the country was founded on: each one of us is due the God-given freedom we have at birth and no one can take it away. The GOP needs more voices like Paul's.
