We got
what we wished for.
As In the notes of Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate
to the Constitution Convention, a lady asked Dr. (Benjamin) Franklin “Well
Doctor what have we got, a republic or a monarchy.” Franklin replied, “A
republic . . . if you can keep it.”
Now that we have a new and probably or possibly second
choice, Republican President we need to reflect on his predecessor’s phrase of ‘hope
and change’. It took eight years for Rush Limbaugh’s wish that I hope he fails.
Our country held Congressional elections twice under the incumbency of Barack Obama.
The pluralities given to Republicans for Congressional control grew, but That
President, still in office, continued in his non conservative edicts while un-obstructed by the
elected Republican opposition. We have a four year chance to watch or oppose if necessary
what Trump attempts. If it is counter what we thought we were electing. Per Mark
Twain: “Politicians and
diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.”
Some who should be
changed might be the ‘never Trumpers’.
The reason why we have a Republic was demonstrated
by our wise Western Neighbors, Pennsylvania and Ohio with others combined to
provide a protected election for the majority of states. Large voting
populations do not control or rule opinions of the minor states, otherwise we
would all be New Yorker's and Californians.
